The story of Lucia
Lucia is the Latin form of Lucy, and the feminine of the old Roman first name Lucius. It is usually linked to lux, the Latin for light. Today it is used in Italian, in Spanish as Lucía, and across much of Europe.
Its spread owes a lot to Saint Lucy, or Lucia, a young martyr of Syracuse in Sicily in the early fourth century. Her feast on 13 December is kept as a festival of light in Sweden and elsewhere in Scandinavia. In Ireland the name has a literary link too: Lucia Joyce was the daughter of James Joyce.
Lucia has been used in Ireland in small numbers throughout the CSO records, with a brief jump in 1967. It grew from the 2000s and had its best year in 2023, with 60 girls and a place at number 87 combined. Since 2018 the CSO has counted Lucía, with a fada, separately, and plain Lucia alone was 160th in 2025. In Northern Ireland it reached number 71 in 2022, and again in 2025.
