Mason began as an English occupational surname for a stonemason, someone who cut and laid stone. Like Carter, Hunter and Cooper, it is one of many trade surnames that have been taken up as first names.
Mason reached the CSO list in 1993 but was still uncommon in 2009. It rose quickly after that and peaked in 2013 with 201 babies. Its best rank was number 32 in 2022. In Northern Ireland it did even better, reaching 15th in 2013.
