Jackson began as an English surname meaning “son of Jack”. Jack was itself a medieval pet form of John. Like Harrison and Mason, it has moved from a family name to a first name, and spellings such as Jaxon and Jaxson have followed it.
The surname is very well known through people such as Andrew Jackson, a president of the United States, and the singer Michael Jackson. It is also the name of Jackson, Mississippi, and many other American towns.
Jackson is a newcomer in Ireland. It first appears in the CSO records in 2005. Its best year was 2017, when 74 boys got the name and it reached number 99. It has eased back since, with 24 boys in 2025. In Northern Ireland it reached number 68 in 2016. The CSO counts Jaxon as a separate name.
