The story of Mira
Mira is one of those names that grew up separately in several places. In Latin-based languages it links to mirus, meaning wonderful or surprising. In Slavic languages it is tied to the word for peace, and it often works as a short form of longer names such as Miroslava or Mirjana. In India it is a form of Meera, the name of a sixteenth-century poet and singer. In English it can also be a short form of Miranda.
There is a star called Mira too. The astronomer Johannes Hevelius gave it that name in 1662 because its brightness rises and falls in a way that puzzled early stargazers.
Mira first appears in the CSO records in 2004, and for years only a handful of girls a year were given it. In 2025, 19 girls were named Mira, its biggest year so far, putting it at number 229. It is rarer in Northern Ireland, where its best rank was number 302 in 2023.
