The story of Nico
Nico is a short form of Nicholas and its European cousins, such as Nicolas, Nicola and Nikos. These all go back to the Greek Nikolaos, made from nikē, victory, and laos, people. The short form is common in Italy, Spain, Germany and Greece, and it has long been used on its own. It was also the stage name of the German singer and model who sang with the Velvet Underground.
Nico first reached the Irish list in 1996, but it stayed very rare until the 2010s. Its best rank was number 353 in 2021, and 10 boys were named Nico in 2025, matching its biggest year. The CSO counts Niko separately. In Northern Ireland it had its best year in 2025, reaching number 253.
