The story of Remi
Remi is a spelling of Rémi or Rémy, the French form of the Latin name Remigius. Remigius is traditionally connected with remex, the Latin for an oarsman, though that explanation is not certain. Remy is the other common English spelling of the same name.
The best-known bearer is Saint Remigius, or Saint Remi, a bishop of Reims who baptised Clovis, king of the Franks, around the year 500. In France Rémi has long been a boys’ name, but in the English-speaking world Remi and Remy are now used for both girls and boys.
The Irish figures show both. Remi first reached three or more girls in a year in 2014 and has been more common for girls since, with its best year in 2024, when 43 girls were named Remi and it reached number 110. Fewer boys get the name, though 10 boys were named Remi in 2024. Since 2018 the CSO has counted Rémi, with an accent, separately.
