The story of Rosa
Rosa is the Latin word for a rose, and it is the usual form of the name Rose in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. In English it is a variant of Rose with a slightly more old-world sound.
In Irish, Rosa is also a place name. Na Rosa is the Irish name for the Rosses in west Donegal, from the plural of ros, a headland. That is a coincidence of spelling rather than a source of the girls’ name.
Rosa first appears in the CSO records in 1970 and was rare until the 2000s. Its best year was 2020, with 23 girls and a place at number 197, and 19 girls were named Rosa in 2025. It is much more popular in Northern Ireland, where 32 girls were given the name in 2025, putting it at number 62 there.
