Skylar is a spelling of Schuyler, a Dutch surname that settlers carried to New York in the seventeenth century. The surname was hard to read for English speakers, so the name was respelled the way it sounds, and Skylar and Skyler have been used as first names since the 1980s. The meaning of the original surname is not certain. Many parents like the name for its opening “sky”, though that is a happy accident rather than its origin.
In America Skylar is given to both boys and girls. In Ireland it has been almost entirely a girls’ name.
Skylar first appears in the CSO records in 2012. Its best year so far was 2022, when 20 girls were named Skylar and it reached number 222. In Northern Ireland it reached number 171 in 2018. The CSO counts Skylar and Skyler as separate names.
