The story of Vivienne
Vivienne is the French feminine form of Vivian. It goes back to Vivianus and Viviana, names from the time of the Roman Empire, which are usually linked to the Latin vivus, alive. The names survived because they were borne by early Christian martyrs and a bishop honoured as a saint. The French spelling reached English with its double n and final e.
The best-known modern bearer is probably the fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, who helped shape the look of punk in London in the 1970s.
In Ireland Vivienne has been given throughout the CSO records. It was at its most popular around 1970, and its best year was 1971, with 49 girls. After a quieter spell it came back a little in the 2010s, and 13 girls were named Vivienne in 2025.
