The story of Zac
Zac is a short form of Zachary, and sometimes of Zachariah or Zacharias. All of these come from the Hebrew Zechariah, a name usually explained as “God has remembered”. Zach, Zack and Zak are other spellings of the same short form, and each is now given as a full name.
Zac first reached the CSO list in 2001. Its biggest year was 2012, with 35 boys, and it has stayed fairly steady since, with 21 boys in 2025. The CSO counts each spelling separately, so Zac, Zach, Zack and Zak all appear as different names, and together they are more common than any one of them suggests. Zac has been more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 88 in 2010.
