The story of Lucas

Lucas is the Latin form of the Greek Loukas, the name of Saint Luke the Evangelist in the New Testament. Tradition describes Luke as a physician and credits him with one of the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. Loukas began as a short, familiar form of Roman names such as Lucius or Lucanus. Lucius is often connected with the Latin lux, light, but that link is not certain.

Lucas is the everyday form of the name in several European languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French and Dutch, while English mostly uses Luke.

In Ireland, Lucas first reached the CSO list in 1979 but stayed rare until the 2000s. It peaked in 2018, when 133 boys were named Lucas and it reached number 55. It has done better in Northern Ireland, where its best place was 22nd in 2013.
