The story of Zuzanna
Zuzanna is the Polish form of Susanna. It goes back to the Hebrew Shoshannah, meaning lily, and it shares its roots with Susan, Suzanne and the Czech and Slovak Zuzana. At home a Zuzanna is often called Zuzia.
In the Book of Daniel, Susanna is a young woman who is falsely accused and then cleared by the young Daniel, and the story helped to spread the name across Christian Europe.
Zuzanna first appears in the CSO records in 2005, as many Polish families settled in Ireland. It rose very fast. Its biggest year was 2009, when 105 girls were named Zuzanna and it reached number 70. It stayed in use through the 2010s and has become rarer since, with 4 girls named Zuzanna in 2025. In Northern Ireland its best rank was number 108 in 2010.
