The story of Alfie
Alfie began as a pet form of Alfred, and it is sometimes used for Alfonso too. Alfred comes from the Old English Ælfræd, made from words meaning elf and counsel. It is best known through Alfred the Great, the ninth-century king of Wessex. Alfie is now very often given as a full name.
In Ireland it reached the CSO list in 2000 and rose steadily through the 2010s. It peaked in 2017 with 184 babies, when it was number 36. It has done better in Northern Ireland, where it reached 10th in 2016.
