The story of Freddie
Freddie is a pet form of Frederick, made from Fred with the ending -ie. Frederick came into English from the German Friedrich. It goes back to old Germanic words for “peace” and “king” or “ruler”, so it is usually explained as “peaceful ruler”. Freddy is another spelling of the same pet form.
Like Archie, Alfie and Frankie, Freddie is one of a group of friendly short forms that parents now choose as full names rather than nicknames.
It is a recent arrival on the Irish lists. Freddie first reached the CSO list in 2003 and climbed through the 2010s. It had its biggest year in 2021, with 113 boys. Its best rank came in 2024, when it reached number 51 on the CSO list. It is much more popular in Northern Ireland, where it was 15th in 2021.
