The story of Albie
Albie is a pet form of Albert, made by adding the friendly ending -ie, in the same way as Alfie from Alfred and Archie from Archibald. Albert is an old Germanic name, usually explained as a blend of words for noble and bright. It became widely known in Britain and Ireland through Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria.
Like Alfie and Archie, Albie is now given as a name in its own right rather than as a nickname. It first appears in the CSO records in 2014 and has grown quickly since. Its biggest year was 2024, with 27 boys, and in 2025 it reached its best rank, number 178.
The name is much more popular across the border. In 2025, 39 boys were named Albie in Northern Ireland, putting it at number 55 there, more than the Republic’s total with a far smaller population.
