The story of Alicia
Alicia is a Latin version of Alice. Alice itself goes back through Old French to the Germanic name Adalheid, the same name that gives us Adelaide. It is usually explained as “noble kind”, from adal, meaning noble. Alicia is also the ordinary Spanish form of the name. The American singer Alicia Keys is its best-known bearer today.
Alicia was already in use in Ireland when the CSO records begin, but it really took off in the 2000s. It reached number 88 in 2005, and its biggest year was 2010, with 75 babies. It has become less common since.
The name was even more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 51 in 2005. The CSO counts Alicia, Alisha and other spellings as separate names.
