The story of Darcy

Darcy began as a Norman surname, d’Arcy, meaning “from Arcy”. It is traced to Bois-d’Arcy in northern France. Families of that name came to England and Ireland after the Norman conquest, and D’Arcy and Darcy are still found as surnames in Ireland today.

Its fame as a first name owes a lot to Fitzwilliam Darcy, the proud hero of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. It has been used for both boys and girls, but in recent decades it has been given mostly to girls.

In Ireland the girls’ name was a slow starter, then grew through the 2000s. Its best year was 2016, when 43 girls were named Darcy and it reached number 137. A few boys are given the name most years too. Darcy is more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 61 in 2016. The CSO counts the spelling Darcey separately.
