The story of Béibhinn
Béibhinn joins two old Irish words: bé, a woman, and binn, sweet-sounding or melodious. So the name means something like “melodious woman”. In older spelling it was written Bé Binn.
It was a name for real women as well as figures of legend. Brian Boru’s mother was called Bé Binn, and so was one of his daughters, and the name turns up among queens and abbesses of medieval Ireland. In mythology Béibhinn appears as a goddess connected with birth, a sister of the river goddess Boann.
