The story of Éadaoin
Éadaoin is the modern Irish spelling of Étaín, a name from the oldest Irish tales. It is usually explained as a pet form of Old Irish ét, meaning passion or jealousy. In English it is often written Aideen.
In the tale Tochmarc Étaíne, the wooing of Étaín, she marries Midir of the Tuatha Dé Danann. His jealous first wife, Fúamnach, turns her into a pool, a worm and then a beautiful scarlet fly. The fly falls into a cup of wine, is swallowed, and Étaín is born again as a mortal child. As a woman she marries the high king Eochaid Airem, until Midir wins her back and the two fly away as swans.
Éadaoin first appears in the CSO records in 1971. Its biggest year was 2008, with 28 girls, and its best rank was number 165 in 2000. The CSO recorded no fadas before 2018, so older years are all spelled Eadaoin. In 2025 all 21 girls were registered as Éadaoin.
