The story of Eloise
Eloise is the English form of the French Éloïse, also written Héloïse. Where the name comes from before that is not certain. One suggestion is an Old German name, Helewidis, built from words for “healthy” and “wide”. Another links it to the Greek sun god Helios, but neither is proven.
The best-known early bearer is Héloïse, a French scholar and abbess of the twelfth century, remembered for her letters with the philosopher Peter Abelard.
Eloise first appears in the CSO records in 1990. It has grown gently ever since, and 2025 was its best year so far, with 33 girls and a combined rank of number 137. It is a little more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 110 in 2024.
