The story of Elise

Elise came into English from French Élise and German Elise, both short forms of Elisabeth. Elisabeth goes back to the Hebrew Elisheva, usually explained as “my God is an oath”. It is closely related to Eliza, Elsie and Elisa, which are all shortenings of the same name.

In Ireland, Elise first reached the CSO list in 1983. It rose through the 2000s and peaked in 2014, with 45 girls and a place at number 132. In 2025, 10 girls were named Elise.

Since 2018 the CSO has recorded accents, and a few parents have used the French spelling Élise. We count it together with Elise. In Northern Ireland the name’s best rank was number 147 in 2003.
