The story of Farrah

Farrah owes its fame to the American actress Farrah Fawcett, a star of the 1970s. Where the name comes from is less clear. It is often taken as a spelling of Farah, an Arabic name meaning “joy” that is used across the Muslim world. It may also be a form of the English surname Farrar, which comes from a medieval word for an ironworker.

The CSO counts Farah separately, and both spellings are used in Ireland.

Farrah first reached the CSO list in 1977, during Farrah Fawcett’s fame, and then faded away for years. It returned in the 2000s and peaked in 2015, with 30 girls and a place at number 185. It has been more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 63 in 2013. In 2025, 9 girls in Ireland were named Farrah.
