The story of Fatima
Fatima is an Arabic name, most famous as the name of Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad and wife of Ali. It is usually traced to an Arabic root meaning “to wean”, and Muslim tradition gives it deeper senses, such as being kept apart from harm. It is used as a girls’ name across the Muslim world.
The name has a second life among Catholics. Fátima is a town in Portugal where, in 1917, three children said they had seen the Virgin Mary. Our Lady of Fátima became widely honoured, and Fatima has been given as a girls’ name in her honour.
In Ireland Fatima first appears in the CSO records in 1991. It has been given to a small number of girls each year since, and 2025 was its best year for rank, with 22 girls and a place at number 199.
