The story of Mollie
Mollie is a spelling of Molly, which grew out of Mary in medieval England. English speakers often swapped an r for an l in pet names, so Mary became Mally and Moll, and then Molly. Over time it was also used for Margaret and Martha, and it has stood on its own as a first name since the 1700s.
In the United States the name was carried by Irish-American families in the 1800s, and Molly has long had an Irish ring to it, not least through the Dublin song of Molly Malone.
The Mollie spelling first reached the CSO list in 1992. Its busiest year was 2013, when 73 girls were named Mollie, and it has hovered around the top 100 ever since. It does better in Northern Ireland, where it ranked 38th in 2025. The CSO counts Mollie and Molly as separate names, so each spelling’s rank understates the name as a whole.
