Gracie began as a pet form of Grace, with the familiar “-ie” ending found in Rosie and Katie. Grace is the English word for the favour of God in Christian teaching, from the Latin gratia. Gracie is also found as a surname.
The singer and actress Gracie Fields, born Grace Stansfield in Lancashire, made the name famous in Britain in the 1930s. Today Gracie is given as a name in its own right rather than as a nickname for Grace.
Gracie first reached three or more girls in a year in Ireland in 2005. It grew unevenly for a decade and has become much more common in the 2020s. Its best year so far was 2025, with 57 girls, when it was number 89 combined, or 88th on the CSO list. It is more popular in Northern Ireland, where it was 49th in 2025, its highest place there.
