The story of Hayden
Hayden began as an English surname taken from a place. The usual explanation is Old English hēg (hay) and denu (valley), for a family that lived in or came from such a spot. Another suggestion links the surname to the Dutch word heiden, meaning heathen. Either way, the first name comes from the surname.
Hayden first appears in the CSO records in 1992, when 14 boys were given the name. It stayed modest through the 1990s and then grew through the 2000s. The most boys in a single year was 34 in 2010, and its best rank was number 177 in 2009. In 2025, 21 boys were named Hayden.
A few girls are given the name too, but far fewer than boys. The CSO counts other spellings, such as Haydn, as separate names.
