The story of Iarlaith

Iarlaith comes from Iarlaithe, the name of a sixth-century Irish saint. What the name means is not known for certain. In English it is usually written Jarlath.

Saint Iarlaith, given in full as Iarlaithe mac Loga, first founded a monastery at Cloonfush, near Tuam, and later made Tuam itself his base. His school there drew students from all over Ireland, and medieval texts count Saint Brendan among them. He is the patron of the Archdiocese of Tuam, where his broken chariot wheel is still used as a symbol. His feast is kept on 6 June.

In Ireland Iarlaith first reached the list in 1991 but stayed rare until about 2010. It has risen strongly since, and 2025 was its best year, with 68 boys and number 85 on the CSO list. It is less common in Northern Ireland, where it was 138th in 2025.
