The story of Lana
Lana has more than one source, so it has no single meaning. In English it is often a short form of Alana. It is also a Russian pet form of names such as Svetlana, and it can come from other names ending in “-lana”.
The name got a lift in the English-speaking world from the Hollywood actor Lana Turner, who was born Julia and took Lana as her screen name.
Lana first appears in the CSO records in 1974 and grew slowly for many years. The most babies came in 2012, with 33, and its best rank was number 156 in 2022. In 2025, 21 girls were named Lana. In Northern Ireland its best rank so far was number 114 in 2020.
