Lucca is a walled city in Tuscany, in central Italy, on the River Serchio. As a boy’s name it sits very close to Luca, the Italian form of Luke, and it is usually heard as another spelling of it. The sources we checked do not say how or when the city name came to be used as a first name, so its meaning is best treated as uncertain.
Lucca first reached the Irish list in 2004. It stayed very rare for years, then grew in the 2020s. The year 2025 was its biggest so far, with 14 boys, placing it at number 298. The CSO counts Luca, Luka and Lucca separately, and Lucca is the least common of the three. It is still very rare in Northern Ireland.
