The story of Myles
Myles is a spelling of Miles, a name the Normans brought to England. Its origin is not settled. It has been linked to the Latin miles, soldier, and to Michael, and its old Latin form Milo may also have been influenced by a Slavic word element meaning gracious. None of these is certain, so the meaning is best left open.
In Ireland the name took on a life of its own. It was used as an English stand-in for Irish names such as Maolmhuire and Maolra, both meaning “devoted to Mary”, and Maolmhórdha. The writer Brian O’Nolan, better known as Flann O’Brien, used the pen name Myles na gCopaleen for his Cruiskeen Lawn column in The Irish Times.
Myles has been given in Ireland through the whole CSO record, usually in small numbers. It has grown in recent years, and 2025 brought the most babies yet, with 49 boys, when it ranked number 112 on the official CSO list. It is doing even better in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 86 in 2025, its best there so far.
