The story of Austin
Austin is a medieval English form of Augustine. In Old French, Agustin was worn down in everyday speech to Aostin and Austin, and the Normans brought that form to England. Augustine itself comes from the Latin Augustus, meaning “majestic” or “venerable”. Austin later became a surname too, and Austen is another spelling.
Austin has been given in Ireland throughout the CSO records. Its best rank came in the 1960s, at number 111 in 1965, and the most boys in one year was 38, in 1972. In 2025, 28 boys were named Austin, and it was number 175 on the combined count.
It has lately been more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 93 in 2024.
