The story of Poppy
Poppy is taken straight from the flower. The English word goes back to Old English popæg, and it covers the many kinds of plant in the genus Papaver. It has been used as a girl’s name since the end of the nineteenth century, mostly in Britain.
In England and Wales it has been in the top 100 since 1996, and it has spread to other English-speaking countries more recently. Its rise has gone hand in hand with a wider liking for flower names and names from the natural world, and a few well-known parents choosing it has helped.
Poppy first reached the Irish list in 1990. Its biggest year for numbers was 2013, with 74 girls, and its best rank came in 2024, at number 88. It is more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached 27th in 2021.
