Summer is simply the English word for the warmest season of the year, used as a girl’s name. It is a recent coinage, often chosen for girls born in the summer months. It is also, separately, an English surname.
Word names like this came into fashion in English-speaking countries in the 1960s and 1970s, along with other season and nature names. Summer has been in regular use since around 1970.
In Ireland Summer first reached the CSO list in 2003. It had the most babies in 2013, with 49 girls, and its best rank was number 115 in 2025, when 40 girls were given it. It caught on sooner in Northern Ireland, where it reached 65th in 2008.
