The story of Teidí
Teidí is written the Irish way but sounds just like Teddy, and teidí is also the Irish word for a teddy bear. We have not found a reference source that records its history as a name, so we leave its meaning as uncertain. Teddy itself is a pet form of Edward or Theodore.
It is a very recent name. It first appears in the CSO records in 2019, and it only became common after 2021.
Its rise has been fast. In 2025, 64 boys got the name once spellings are combined, at number 92. The CSO counts Teidí (58 babies) and Téidí (6) separately, which put Teidí alone at number 99. It has only just appeared in Northern Ireland.
