The story of Aida

Aida is used in several languages, and its origin is not settled. It is known as an Arabic girls’ name, for which a range of meanings have been suggested, from “returning” to “helper” and “gift”. None of them is certain.

In Europe the name is best known from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Aida, first staged in 1871, about an Ethiopian princess held captive in Egypt. The Egyptologist who sketched the plot claimed it was an Egyptian name, but that is not proven. The opera has kept it in quiet use in English-speaking countries ever since.

In Ireland Aida first appears in the CSO records in 2000. It has grown slowly, and its best year was 2020, with 19 girls and a place at number 231. In 2025, 18 girls were named Aida. Since 2018 the CSO has also recorded a few girls as Aída with a fada, and those are counted separately.
