The story of Albert
Albert is a Germanic name built from two parts, adal, meaning noble, and beraht, meaning bright or famous. The Old English form of the same name was Æthelbeorht, which survives as Ethelbert. The form Albert came into English through French and Latin.
It became hugely popular in nineteenth-century England because of Prince Albert, the German-born husband of Queen Victoria. The scientist Albert Einstein made it familiar the world over, and in Ireland Albert Reynolds served as Taoiseach in the 1990s.
Albert was already in use in Ireland when the CSO records begin, and it sat just outside the top 100 in the 1960s. Its biggest year was 1966, with 35 babies. It became rare by the 1990s, but it has come back along with other old-fashioned names, with 22 babies in 2021. In Northern Ireland its best rank is number 200 in 2023.
