The story of George
George comes from the Greek Georgios, built on georgos, a farmer or earth worker, from the words for earth and work. It spread across Christian Europe through Saint George, the soldier martyr later made patron saint of England, and six British kings have carried it. The Irish form is Seoirse.
Famous Irish bearers include the playwright George Bernard Shaw and the Belfast footballer George Best.
George was well used in Ireland when the CSO records begin, and 1964 remains its busiest year, with 115 boys. After a long dip it returned in the 2010s, reaching number 65 in 2019 on the CSO ranking. It is more popular in Northern Ireland, where it ranked 34th in 2025, against number 112 on the CSO list.
