The story of Dominic
Dominic comes from the Latin Dominicus, built on dominus, “lord”. It is usually explained as “of the Lord” or “belonging to God”. It has long been a favourite with Catholic families across Europe.
The name is known above all through Saint Dominic, a Spanish priest who founded the Dominican order of friars in the thirteenth century. The Dominicans have had houses in Ireland since the Middle Ages.
Dominic has been given steadily in Ireland throughout the CSO records. Its highest rank came in 1964, the first year of the data, at number 84. The most boys in a single year was 48, in 2017. In 2025 there were 32, and it was number 154 on the combined count.
