The story of Carson
Carson started out as a surname, found in both Scotland and Ireland. Its meaning is not known. One suggestion is that it is a form of the surname Curzon, and there are other guesses, but none is settled, so it is best treated as uncertain.
Like Mason and Carter, it is one of many surnames that have moved across to be used as first names, a fashion that began in North America. Several American places are called Carson, some of them named after the frontiersman Kit Carson.
In the Republic, Carson first reached the CSO list in 2004 with 3 boys. Its best year was 2018, when 24 boys were named Carson and it was number 223. It has been more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached 118th in 2012, and where 340 boys have been given the name since 2000, compared with 199 in the Republic.
