The story of Croí
Croí is the ordinary Irish word for heart. It goes back to Old Irish cride, and it is related to the English word “heart” through a shared ancient root. In everyday Irish it is also used for the core of something and, warmly, for a sweetheart. Like Saoirse or Fiadh, it is a word that parents have turned into a name, rather than an old name with a saint or hero behind it.
Croí is a very new name. It first appears in the CSO records for boys in 2015, and a few girls have also been given it. Its best year so far was 2024, when 13 boys were named Croí, putting it at number 293.
The CSO counts Croí and Croi as separate names, since fadas were only recorded from 2018. The girls’ name Croía, built on the same word, has become far more popular.
