The story of Diego
Diego is a Spanish name. In medieval Latin records it appears as Didacus, but where that came from is not clear, so we have left the meaning open. It has long been common in Spain and across Latin America.
The footballer Diego Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup, made the name known everywhere. The Mexican painter Diego Rivera is another famous bearer.
In Ireland Diego has been given in small numbers since the 2000s. Its best year so far was 2021, when 16 boys were named Diego, at number 270. There were 10 in 2025.
