The story of Mateo
Mateo is the Spanish form of Matthew, and it is also used in Croatian. It came through the Latin Matthaeus and Greek from the Hebrew Mattityahu, a name usually explained as “gift of God”. The CSO counts the Italian form, Matteo, as a separate name.
The name is common across Spain and Latin America, and it has spread widely in English-speaking countries in recent years.
Mateo first appears in the CSO records in 2005. It rose through the 2010s and peaked in 2024, with 42 babies, when it reached number 127. In 2025, 30 boys were named Mateo. It is much less common in Northern Ireland, where it was number 237 in 2025.
