The story of Edie
Edie began as a pet form of Edith, an Old English name usually explained as joining ead, wealth or good fortune, with gyth, war. Edith was well used in Victorian and Edwardian times. Today Edie is often given as a full name, with no Edith behind it.
It belongs to the same revival as other old-style short names for girls, such as Evie, Elsie and Ivy.
Edie first reached the CSO list in 2004. It rose through the 2010s and peaked in 2020, with 31 girls and a place at number 157. In 2025, 12 girls were named Edie in Ireland. Northern Ireland also had 12 that year, which gave it a rank of number 154 in 2025, its best there so far.
