The story of Emmy
Emmy started as a pet form of longer names such as Emily, Emma, Emmeline and Amelia. In Thackeray’s novel Vanity Fair, the character Amelia is called Emmy. Today it is often given on its own. It is also spelled Emmie.
The television award called the Emmy has a separate story: its name came from “Immy”, a nickname for a kind of camera tube.
Emmy first reached the Irish list in 2008, with 7 girls. It has grown gently since, and was at its best in 2024, with 17 girls, at number 248. There were 10 in 2025.
