Maddie is a pet form of names beginning with Mad-, especially Madeleine and Madison. Madeleine goes back to Mary Magdalene, whose name means a woman from Magdala, a town on the Sea of Galilee. Madison began as an English surname. Maddie was a nickname for both before parents started to use it as a full name.
It sits with Millie, Maisie and Mollie among the short, friendly names ending in -ie that have been popular with Irish and British parents in recent years.
